MSRC's Connection with Russia

November 1, 2021     The Veterinarian's Creed by R.R. Dykstra, DVM

It has been a great pleasure for me to travel to many countries as a veterinarian.  None of those countries were, at the beginning, as intimidating as the Russian Federation.  I first visited in early 2017 and found the people and especially the veterinarians eager for information and knowledge about disease control and production technology.  I found them eager to learn, but some engrained norms of the country detract from the strength of the Veterinary Profession.  Perhaps there is a need and purpose behind which the veterinary leaders can challenge themselves.  Russian veterinarians must lead in the development of their profession as a true profession.

Unmistakably, the Russian pork industry (and other livestock sectors) need a stronger Veterinary Profession - one committed to the principles laid down by Dr. RR Dykstra, so eloquently written.  Memorialized on a plaque which stands still today at the South Dakota Animal Disease Research and Diagnostic Lab, Dr. Dykstra's words are public for all who come and go from SDSU's legacy laboratory.   Those words struck and inspired me the first time that I read them, and I have not forgotten their overwhelming importance.

I humbly share the translation of Dr. Dykstra's message, which gave me a clearer understanding of the important role that all Veterinarians share - for us to maintain our profession we must treat it as more than a job, more than a means of earning a living to aid each other in times that are normal and in times of crisis Veterinary skills and knowledge were given to us not just for us but for the benefit of Society as a whole.

It is an honor to share this important Creed (Кредо) with all of the veterinarians serving he Russian Pork Industry.

Sincerely,

Neil DeBuse, DVM

The Veterinarian’s Creed

To Regard My Profession as Something more than a means of a Livelihood:

To Value Character More Highly than Reputation and the Truth Above Popularity:

To Be Merciful and Human, Preventing Needless Suffering Among Dumb Beasts:

To Be Faithful and Zealous, Preventing Needless Loss to Those I am called on to Serve;

To Guide My Conduct By Sober Judgement, and My Judgement By A Never- Sleeping Conscience;

To Be Modest and Open Minded And Thankful for Every Opportunity to Increase My Knowledge and My Usefulness;

To Be a Co-Worker with My Fellow Practitioners by the Mutual Interchange of Counsel and Assistance;

To Be True to Myself, Measuring My Success by the Value of the Service I Render Rather than the by the Fee I Receive.

Кредо Ветеринара

Рассматривать свою профессию как нечто большее, чем средства к существованию;

Ценить больше личность,

чем репутацию, а истину больше

Признания;

Быть милосердным и человечным, предотвращая ненужные страдания среди Бессловесных животных;

Быть верным и усердным, предотвращая ненужные потери для тех, кому я призван служить;

Руководствоваться в своем поведении трезвыми суждениями, основанными на никогда не дремлющей совести:

Быть скромным и открытым и благодарить за каждую возможность увеличить мои знания и свою востребованность;

Быть коллегой своим практикующим специалистам посредством взаимного обмена помощью и советами;

Быть верным самому себе, измеряя свой успех по ценности услуг, которые я оказываю, а не по вознаграждению, которое я получаю.
